Phoenix Academy Record Win Over Walton Raiders

Updated Monday February 2, 2015 by Niall Fenton.

On Friday night Walton Raiders RFC returned to the Georgia league with a fixture against the Phoenix Academy side at Walton High School. It proved a salutary experience for the Raiders with Phoenix running out comfortable winners by a record score of 72 to 0.

Phoenix started strongly and they were clearly anxious to put the South Doyle performance behind them. Nick Koumandarakis, debuting at flanker, was first on the scorecard in what was to be a terrific individual game performance. This was quickly followed by tries from Austin Willis (2). Jesus Faz, showing huge pace, Bennett Erickson with a great try and Garrick Glaudin scoring shortly before the half time whistle. Since Phoenix restricted themselves to drop goal conversions in order to maximize game time, the half time score was Phoenix 34, Walton 0.

Garrick Glaudin, in a reprise of his try at the end of the first half, opened the second half scoring for Phoenix with Chris Bagley also getting on the score sheet with a strong line break and run to the try line. Lechandt Opperman worked a set play from a penalty with Captain Nico Bein that resulted in him crossing untouched for a try straight from the practice field --- very satisfying. The forwards were clearly feeling a little neglected at this point in the game and this was quickly rectified by “DJ” Johnson storming over for yet another Phoenix score and restoring some credibility to our hard working forwards. Garrick Glaudin finished the Phoenix scoring with two excellent tries following precise handling from all of the backs. The final score was Phoenix 72; Walton 0 and Coach Lukas and Coach Connor must have been very pleased with the clinical performance of their team on the night. Next up for the Academy is the eagerly anticipated match up with Charlotte Tigers on Saturday at North Park.  This performance augers well for that game.
