Phoenix Rugby Club Wins Opening Season Match - Oct. 16, 2013
Phoenix Rugby Club vs Lambert RFC 52 - 0Updated Sunday September 14, 2014 by Cindy Cooper.
On Wednesday night the Phoenix HS team played their first match of the year against local rivals Lambert RFC. A spirited encounter ensued with Phoenix playing a total of 21 players, many of whom were making their rugby debuts. The game followed a similar pattern to those played last season with Lambert unable to counter the excellent scrummaging, rucking and tackling of the fired up Phoenix forwards. Captain of the day Doran Erickson rose to the occasion and was joined by solid performances from Tanner Simpson, Ryan Quinn and Joe Lynch. Chandler Cox made some strong carries but needs to focus on the "grunt work" of a forward in addition to heading up the Phoenix pod system.
Of concern was the lack of possession given to the Phoenix backs. Given a great opportunity, newcomer Garrick Blaudin made a terrific line break early in the game and scored a debut try but that was it from the Phoenix backs on the night. With so much speed and size in our backs, it was crazy that we did not utilize them more --- throughout the night, our wingers Shadman and Kyle did not receive one pass!! Trey Gibson played his first game of rugby on the wing and, despite not getting any consistent ball, still made some crushing tackles.
The game finished with a 52 to 0 score in favor of the Phoenix, an excellent result by any standards and a good start to the new season. Our next game will be against Pope Greyhounds and we can expect to be challenged from the start.
Our thanks to Joe Fanning and the rest of the Lambert coaching staff for the game --- Lambert RFC never give up, regardless of the score! A final thank you to our referee on the night, Clinton Cridick, who did an excellent job.
