Phoenix Academy vs Lambert RFC, March 21, 2014Updated Sunday September 14, 2014 by Alpharetta Phoenix Rugby.
On Friday night at North Park, Phoenix played Lambert in a game kindly re-scheduled by our opponents due our commitment to the Charlotte Ruggerfest weekend. Lambert came into the game on a high having secured their first GHSRA win against Pope Greyhounds the previous weekend.
Lambert started with great enthusiasm and initially laid siege to the Phoenix line but were unable to cross with Lechandt Opperman finally clearing to touch. Literally, from then on it was all Phoenix although Lambert defended enthusiastically and made some excellent tackles. Phoenix settled into a pattern and was just too strong in every area for what is a very young and developing Lambert side. The final score was Phoenix 47, Lambert 0 with tries being scored by Phoenix captain John Quinlan, Trey Gibson, Chandler Cox, Austin Willis, Jeremiah Williams and two by Kurt Meyer. Thus, Phoenix earned the valuable bonus point for scoring more than 4 tries. Lechandt Opperman was almost perfect with conversions slotting 6 of 7 opportunities for a personal tally of 12 points on the night. Kurt Meyer was named man of the match for his double try scoring evening. The only negative for Phoenix was the departure from the game of Chandler Cox with a head injury that required 12 stitches at the hospital.
Although the result was satisfactory, Phoenix will face sterner opposition when facing Lassiter Trojans next week in a match of unbeaten with the winner likely going to regionals. There were an alarming number of high or missed tackles and far too many passes dropped. Against stronger opposition this would have resulted in a much greater consequence and the team will have to raise their game against Lassiter Trojans in order to win out on the season.
