Phoenix Academy Vs Pope Greyhounds, April 11, 2014Updated Sunday September 14, 2014 by Alpharetta Phoenix Rugby.
On a balmy Friday night at North Park, Phoenix Academy wrapped up the regular season with a final league game against Pope Greyhounds. Although missing a few players due to Spring Break and injuries, Phoenix fielded a strong team anxious to retain their current unbeaten league status.
As in previous games, Phoenix were a little slow to start and, although dominant from a territorial perspective, were failing to convert their possession into points. Finally, Jeremiah Williams made a storming run to open the scoring and the flood gates opened. Despite two tries being disallowed due to the "scores" running out of the try zone, Phoenix held a comfortable lead of 35 to 0 at the break and looked to be coasting.
The second half continued the Phoenix dominance with first time starter Nick Koumandarakis contributing two terrific tries and Cristian Calvallo kicking his first conversion. The aggressive Phoenix tackling continued from the Lassiter game and, overall, the team simply did not allow the Pope team to play. Toward the middle of the half, Phoenix emptied the bench and the newcomers continued the strong performance with Bennett Erickson contributing an excellent try.
In all it was a clinical performance with 10 tries accomplished. Try scores were Jeremiah Williams (2), Nico Bein (2), Nick Koumandarakis (2), Austin Willis, Chandler Cox, Trey Gibson and Bennett Erickson. Conversions came from Lechandt Opperman (5) and Cristian Calvallo. The final score was a resounding one ----- Phoenix 62, Pope Greyhounds 7 and the unbeaten league run was complete.
Nico Bein was named the Man of the Match scoring two tries and giving a master class performance in defense.
Next up is the State Championship semi-final at North Park on April 23rd. Based on this performance, Phoenix will be a difficult team to beat.
