Phoenix Academy H.S. vs. Mill Creek RFC, May 2, 2014Updated Sunday September 14, 2014 by Alpharetta Phoenix Rugby.
On Friday night the Phoenix Academy team played the Georgia Single School Champions, Mill Creek, in a friendly match at North Park in preparation for the upcoming big game with Lassiter Trojans.
Throughout the game, Phoenix used a number of player and position combinations in order to give the maximum number of players much needed playing time. The long break since the final league game against Pope was very evident and almost all of the players, and the team in general, looked very stale. Although Phoenix never looked like losing the game, overall there was a distinct lack of energy and urgency in the team’s performance and this inevitably resulted in poor execution.
Tries form Chandler Cox, Jerry Williams and Ruan Meyer in the first period, combined with two conversions form Lechandt Opperman resulted in a comfortable Phoenix lead of 19 to 5 at the break. However, Mill Creek outscored Phoenix by 2 tries to one in the remainder of the game to leave the final score at Phoenix 24, Mill Creek 19. The final Phoenix try came from Kurt Meyer.
This game should represent a wake-up call to this currently undefeated and talented Phoenix team as they head to South Carolina on Sunday for their final preparation game against the SC All-Stars. The performance must be brought back up to the level at which they were playing a month ago or a disappointment could be looming in the Championship game against Lassiter at North Park on May 17.
