Phoenix Remain Unbeaten in MSIRL

The Phoenix Varsity squad travelled to Columbia, SC on Saturday to play fellow MSIRL team Irmo Rugby. Notwithstanding being without some usual starting players, Phoenix fielded a strong side and debuted the new Varsity game jerseys to great approval.
Phoenix, conscious that the shorter 30-minute halves employed in South Carolina would make scoring 4 tries a challenge, opened with great energy. Tim Voin opened the scoring with a try in the corner following a neat backs move and good individual handling. The forwards then contributed a storming try from Brendan Bibb; Ollie Kennett then put Phoenix up 15 to zero with a typical Kennett running, swerving try before scoring 4 more tries to put the game result beyond doubt! Interspersed between these tries were scores from flanker Griffin Tucker, returning from injury, and scrum-half for the day, Mitchell Blair. The final score was a conversion of Ollie Kennett’s last try by debutant kicker Andres Lozada to leave the match result at Phoenix 55, Irmo 5. Phoenix thus secured the valuable bonus point and remain unbeaten in MSIRL action heading into the next MSIRL game against East Cobb Trojans.
It is always difficult to find fault with 9 tries and a 50 point Phoenix win but it is a concern that of 10 kickoffs from Irmo, the Phoenix team only caught 2, with one drop directly leading to the sole Irmo score. This facet of play will need to be corrected quickly. Overall though the team played well with outstanding performances coming from Zubin Fredericks, Kyle Monahan and Tim Voin. Five try scorer Ollie Kennett was named Man of the Match in a flawless performance at out half. Next up for this team is a re-match with East Cobb Trojans in a crucial MSIRL league match-up that will go a long way to deciding the playoff race. A good performance from this very talented team should see them retain their 2018 unbeaten MSIRL record.
