Three Phoenix Players Selected for USA Eagles & USA South Panthers

Updated Saturday December 24, 2016 by Niall Fenton.

Three former Phoenix players, Campbell Robinson, Austin Willis and Nick Koumandarakis have been selected for USA representative duty.

Campbell Robinson, the Phoenix Varsity back row forward last year, will line out for the USA U19 team against Canada. Campbell, who is currently on scholarship with Arkansas State University, was selected by the USA South team last year and this latest honor continues his upward rugby progression.

Austin Willis, the Phoenix Varsity captain in 2015, goes to the USA Rugby South Panthers U20 squad after a terrific season on scholarship with Furman University where they lost in the final of the college D2 championship earlier this month. His 2016 season and prior seasons with Phoenix left no one surprised at his Eagles call-up.  In addition, Austin just competed this past weekend on the USA Rugby South Panthers U20 team in the Barbados 7’s U20.

Nick Koumandarakis was the Phoenix Varsity captain in 2016 and, like Austin Willis, accepted a rugby scholarship to Furman where he has been an integral part of their high-profile rugby program. Being a part of the USA Rugby South Panthers U20 roster is further evidence of his rugby ability and dedication.  In addition, Nik competed as well this past weekend on the USA Rugby South Panthers U20 team in the Barbados 7’s U20.

Campbell, Austin and Nick join an illustrious list of former Phoenix Rugby players who have been recognized by representative honors at the national level. In 2010 Phoenix had 4 players in the USA Eagles camp - Tim Barford, Will Farrell, Luke Rogusky and Jimmy Lynch with Will Farrell selected as USA captain. Who knows, with this quality group, we could see a Phoenix Rugby USA captain again in 2017.
